About
An aromatic Gewürztraminer-led blend from Protero's organically farmed vineyard at Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills, rounded out with Riesling and a small dash of Sauvignon Blanc. Lifted aromas of lychee, ginger flower and dusty rose lead into a palate of rose water, citrus and grapefruit, closing on a grassy, lemongrass-spiced finish. Made to drink on release rather than cellar.
The fruit comes from two blocks of the Protero vineyard. The site sits at 500 metres on a gentle north-east facing slope in the Kenton Valley. Rose and Frank Baldasso planted the site in 1999. Stephen and Fiona Pannell bought it in late December 2019, and within days it was ringed by bushfire. It came through thanks to the people who defended it. The name Protero marks that season and the Pannells' regard for them.
The three parcels are destemmed, pressed gently and held as juice before blending, so they ferment together rather than apart. Primary fermentation runs a quick six days. The wine then settles slowly in tank with three grams of residual sugar left in it, and finishes at 13.5 percent.
That trace of sweetness is what lets it stand up to chilli. Serve it cold with a green curry or Sichuan dumplings, and drink it young.
Producer note
Made by Stephen Pannell of S.C. Pannell as a separate Adelaide Hills project, inspired by the white wines of northern Italy and built to suit the spicy food he and his household favour.
