About

Shumi's Tsinandali follows the traditional Kakhetie AOP blend of Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane, cold-fermented in stainless steel to keep it fresh and fruit-driven rather than skin-contact or oaked. Pale straw with green highlights, it opens with lemon, lime, green apple and feijoa, and carries lively acidity through to a fine, mineral, mouth-watering finish.

Shumi's cellar sits in Tsinandali itself, next door to the Chavchavadze estate and its museum park. The family founded the winery in 1997, which makes it one of the first private wineries of modern Georgia. It now farms about 200 hectares across Mukuzani, Napareuli, Kindzmarauli and Tsinandali. Parts of that are organic and biodynamic, a first for Georgia.

The grapes are picked by hand and handled with as little intervention as the fresh style allows. This is the clean, modern face of Kakheti, and the wine to start with if qvevri styles feel like a leap. The griffin on the label is the creature that, in Georgian myth, brought mankind its first bunch of grapes.

Serve it well chilled. Grilled fish, oysters, green salads and soft cheeses all suit it, or pour it on its own before dinner.

Producer note

Shumi Winery was founded in 1997 in the Alazani River Valley at the foot of the Gombori Range in Kakheti — the traditional cradle of Georgian wine — and produces the Tsinandali blend alongside indigenous varieties such as Saperavi from the same eastern-Kakheti heartland.
