About
From the Farr family's north-facing limestone slope in the Moorabool Valley, planted 1994 beside the Sangreal pinot vines. Hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, fermented naturally with about 30% new French oak, then bottled eleven months after picking. The nose is ripe fruit over soil, flint and river pebbles; the palate is sleek but generous — ripe citrus, white stone fruit, a whisper of almond meal — held on a spine of fine, saline acidity with real energy and tension.
This Chardonnay grows beside the Sangreal Pinot Noir block, planted in 1994 on an exposed north-facing slope. Red soil sits over limestone, which runs into the root zone. The site is close-planted and low-yielding, giving the wine its firm shape and mineral line.
The fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed. All solids go to barrel for natural fermentation, with about thirty percent new French oak. Subtle lees work encourages malolactic fermentation before bottling after eleven months. Citrus, stone fruit and almond meal meet saline acidity. Serve it with roast chicken, grilled fish, or pasta with brown butter and sage.
Producer note
By Farr is Gary Farr, the iconic Victorian winemaker who built his name at Bannockburn, with son Nick now making the wines. The estate chases small yields of intensely flavoured fruit off ancient soils, and was The Real Review's Australian Winery of the Year in 2022 and 2025.
