About
James Halliday founded Coldstream Hills — it's one of the Yarra's defining Pinot estates. The 2020 vintage is now mature and drinking beautifully.
The fruit for the Yarra Valley Pinot comes from sites across the valley rather than one block. The Yarra's continental climate, cool at night and mild to warm by day, gives its Pinot perfume and elegance rather than weight. The winemakers vary their methods parcel by parcel, whole bunch among them, to build complexity without any one technique standing out.
The 2020 spent eight months in oak, 27 per cent of it new that year, with the rest seasoned barrels. Winepilot found raspberries, cherries, a little bramble and a touch of soy on the nose, with silky tannins and a mineral background. They called it a balanced, early-drinking Pinot that would take two or three years in the cellar. Six years on, that time has been served.
Serve it cool, around 14 degrees. Duck, mushroom risotto or a roast chicken all suit it, and it will not need decanting.
