About
Terra Sancta's Mysterious Diggings Blanc de Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir (Abel clone), destemmed and pressed immediately with no time on skins, so it pours as a white wine. Fermented natively in tank with no oak. The nose shows passionfruit, mango, apricot, fresh peach and white flowers, with crunchy apple, lemon peel and green tea. The palate carries tropical fruit, nectarine, quince and apricot kernel, with kaffir lime and a lingering minerality. Bright acidity, dry and crisp on the finish. Bottled 16 September 2024.
The fruit is hand-picked from Riverblock on the Terra Sancta estate, where the Abel clone Pinot is grown organically. The trick is speed. Picked, destemmed and pressed with no skin contact, the juice runs out the colour of Champagne rather than rosé. The wine stays white all the way to the bottle.
Mysterious Diggings takes its name from Bannockburn's old mining days. The label is a nod to the diggers who worked this ground before the vines arrived.
It is vegan friendly, and Terra Sancta reckons it will cellar for up to seven years, though it is made for drinking now. Serve it cold with shellfish, fish, chicken or a vegetable dish. Think of it as a Pinot Noir for a hot afternoon, and pour it for anyone who says they do not like red wine.
Producer note
Terra Sancta is a Pinot Noir specialist on Felton Road in Bannockburn, Central Otago, with roughly 80% of its vineyard planted to the variety — including the fruit used here, simply handled without skin contact.
