About
Alkina is a high-end biodynamic Barossa estate. Old Quarter Grenache — concentrated, structured, age-worthy.
Old Quarter comes from Alkina's vineyard blocks planted in the 1950s. The 2022 blend is 60 per cent Grenache, 35 per cent Shiraz and five per cent Mataro. All vines are about 70 years old and the farm is certified organic and biodynamic.
Winter rain was followed by cold, dry conditions, then frost and hail in November. Mild weather slowed ripening until rain and a warm spell finished the season. Grenache fermented in concrete tulips with whole bunches, while the other parcels were also made in concrete. The wine matured there for nine months. The producer recommends cellaring it for ten years or more.
