A concentrated herbal tincture from Trinidad, first mixed in 1824 as a medicine rather than a drink. The label reads 44.7 percent, but it goes into a glass two dashes at a time, so the strength never really lands. Reddish brown, gentian bitter, and the thing that makes an Old Fashioned taste finished.
Dr Johann Siegert was a German surgeon who came to Angostura, a port on the Orinoco in Venezuela. He arrived from Germany in 1820 and served as Surgeon General. In 1824 he perfected a formula he called amargo aromatico, made for his medical practice rather than for a bar.
By 1875 the family business had moved to Trinidad, and manufacturing began in Port of Spain. His sons Carlos, Alfredo and Luis ran it. That is still where it is made. Despite the name there is no angostura bark in it, and gentian sits under the herbs and spices.
It goes in by the dash. Two into an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan, one over ice with lemon, lime and soda. A few drops will season food or finish a pisco sour.
Producer note
Angostura Limited has made the bitters in Port of Spain since Dr Siegert's three sons moved the family business to Trinidad in the 1870s. The company took its current name in 1992.
