About
Higher rye gives spice and freshness with less weight. The bourbon for whiskey-curious Scotch drinkers.
Basil Hayden is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon with a high-rye style. Booker Noe introduced it in 1992 as part of the Small Batch collection. The name refers to Meredith Basil Hayden Sr, a Maryland rye farmer who moved to Kentucky and began distilling.
Rye brings black pepper and a drier spice to the bourbon's sweeter notes. The producer lists charred oak, vanilla caramel, brown sugar and dried fruit across the aroma and palate. It is bottled at 40 per cent alcohol, keeping the texture lighter than many full-proof bourbons. Sip it neat or over one large cube. Its pepper and oak also hold up well in a Manhattan with sweet vermouth.
