About
Easy-drinking entry-tier Japanese whisky with smooth texture. Built for a highball.
Black Nikka goes back to 1956, and the Clear Blend arrived in 1997 as a lighter take on it. The idea was a whisky that people who do not usually drink whisky could enjoy. Nikka blends non-peated malt with grain whisky, so there is next to no smoke, and bottles it at 37 percent.
The spirit comes from both Nikka distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Masataka Taketsuru, who founded Nikka, believed good whisky should reach as many people as possible, and this bottle is that belief at work. It has been Japan's best-selling whisky by volume for five straight years, 2021 to 2025. The King of Blenders on the label dates from 1965.
Drink it the Japanese way. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour a measure, top with cold soda and stir once. Vanilla, lemon rind and biscuity malt come through clean. Fried chicken or salted edamame beside it.
