About

Pinot noir from the Farr family's Irrewarra vineyard near Beeac in Victoria's Western District, planted on its own roots in 2001 over ancient volcanic soils and limestone. Whole-bunch inclusion and gentle extraction keep it fragrant and savoury: wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry with dried rose petals, warm spice and forest floor, then a silken palate of bright red fruit, vibrant acidity and fine tannins running to a persistent, mineral-laced finish.

The Calvert family planted the vineyard in 2001, choosing a mix of clones and setting them on their own roots rather than grafted stock. The block sits at the top of a slope facing two large sheets of water to the north, Salt Lake and the Calvert Lough. The plains are exposed to the weather, and the vines depend on natural rainfall.

That exposure is the point. Cool air off the lakes and wind across the plains slow the season down. The 2024 came in at 13.5 percent alcohol. Oak sits in the background and supports the fruit rather than leading it.

The Farrs describe it simply: sweet and sour cherries, earth and spice, with an elegant structure. Serve it a touch below room temperature with duck, lamb or a mushroom dish. It has the shape to improve over the medium term.

Producer note

By Farr was established by Gary Farr in 1994 and is now led by his son Nick, farming organically with the aim of letting the vineyard speak for itself. Irrewarra is their outpost on the volcanic plains about 150 km southwest of Melbourne — six acres of pinot noir and two of chardonnay.
