About
A five-bottle Barolo case from Poderi Gianni Gagliardo, a family estate based in La Morra with vineyards spread across five Barolo villages — La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo and Verduno. It ships as the producer's 'Barolo Experience' case: five 750mL bottles bundled together rather than the standard twelve-bottle case. Every bottle is Nebbiolo, grown and vinified under Barolo DOCG rules.
The case holds one bottle each of five different 2019 Barolos. Monvigliero from Verduno, Lazzarito from Serralunga d'Alba, Castelletto and Mosconi from Monforte d'Alba, and the Barolo del Comune di La Morra. The estate calls Monvigliero mineral and elegant. Castelletto faces east and runs tense and spicy. Mosconi is the velvety one with fine tannin. Lazzarito brings volume and energy, and the La Morra bottling comes off younger soils and drinks gently early.
The family story starts with the Collas. Paolo Colla bought a farmhouse in La Morra and made his first Barolo there in 1961. His daughter Marianna married Gianni Gagliardo, and the name changed with her. The cellar is dug under that original farmhouse and works by gravity. The 28 hectares are farmed organically for about 170,000 bottles a year.
Open the five over a winter and taste the villages against each other.
Producer note
The Gagliardo family has grown grapes in Piedmont's Langhe zone since 1847. Gianni Gagliardo founded the winery in its current form in 1973, and his sons Stefano, Alberto and Paolo now run the estate. It holds eight Barolo Cru vineyards across five villages (about 26 acres in Langhe) plus vineyards in the neighbouring Roero.
