About
Grown on West Cape Howe's Langton and Karri Oak vineyards in a 2025 season of near-perfect growing conditions and a long, warm, dry summer, picked ripe and full of flavour. Rich and full-bodied, with citrus zest giving way to creamy, Danish-pastry richness and a lashing of vanillan oak over ripe stone fruit — glossy and powerful, balanced by bright acidity that lengthens the palate.
The richness comes from the cellar as much as the season. The juice was fermented in French oak barrels, a fifth of them new, and left there for ten months. It sat on its lees the whole time with a stir every fortnight, and went through full malolactic conversion. That is the old-school part: every lever that adds cream and weight to chardonnay, pulled on purpose.
The Langton vineyard at Mount Barker was planted in 1978 and anchors the range. More fruit comes from Frankland River and Porongurup. The company dates from 1997, is owned by four Western Australian families, and Gavin Berry has led the winemaking since 2004. Their stated aim is simply wines that people love to drink.
Drink it over the next two to three years. Roast chicken with the skin on, or a creamy pasta.
Producer note
'Old School' is West Cape Howe's deliberately traditional, richly-oaked take on Chardonnay, grown across the Great Southern region rather than a single site.
