About

Bodegas Caudalía grow Garnacha in the Aibar Valley, in the foothills of the Navarrese Pyrenees, on clay-limestone soils. This wine splits evenly between Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Roya — a pale mutation of the same grape — fermented in tank and aged five months in concrete, with no oak. It pours medium-light ruby and tastes of red plum, cherry and raspberry, soft on entry with bright acidity running through a long finish.

Umea comes from Bodegas Caudalía in Navarra's Aibar Valley, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Clay-limestone ground and the area's altitude suit Garnacha well. This red brings together Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Roya, a pale mutation of the same grape.

The grapes ferment in tank and the wine spends five months in concrete, with no oak involved. That leaves room for red plum, cherry and raspberry, supported by bright acidity and light tannin. Raquel Grandival Allende and Iván Lopez Barco restored the old Lerga cooperative cellar for their winery. Its original concrete tanks remain part of the operation. Serve this lightly chilled with grilled pork, chorizo, or roasted peppers.

Producer note

Raquel Grandival Allende and Iván Lopez Barco built the winery in Lerga, a village of 55 people, inside the abandoned cellar of the old Lerga cooperative — they kept its original concrete tanks. It makes around 60,000 bottles a year across 15 hectares, and exports about 80 percent of it.
