About
Fontana farm this Garnacha organically on loamy clay at Uclés, high on the plains of central Castile. It never goes near a barrel, just eight to ten days on skins in stainless steel and then a few months resting in tank. Raspberry and cherry with a herbal lift, fresh and smooth all the way through.
The vines are around 20 years old, planted on loamy clay in Uclés in central Castile. Fontana works more than 1,000 hectares up at 700 to 900 metres, certified organic. Sunny days and cold nights at that altitude ripen the fruit while holding on to its acidity.
Nothing here sees oak. The grapes ferment in temperature controlled stainless steel with eight to ten days on skins, then rest four to six months in tank. That keeps the wine bright and juicy, full of raspberry and cherry with a light herbal edge and gentle spice on the finish.
The Mesta was the medieval shepherds' guild of Castile, which controlled the droving routes for sheep across the country. Some of those old cañadas still cross Fontana's vineyards, where centenary oak trees also stand.
Producer note
Mesta is made by Peninsula Vinicultores at Fontana Bodegas y Viñedos in Fuente de Pedro Naharro, in Cuenca. The vineyards cover more than 1,000 hectares of organically farmed central Castile, between 700 and 900 metres.
