About

Barbera grown on the red volcanic soil at Gundagai, in southern New South Wales. Blueberry and dark plum up front with cherry underneath, medium bodied, gentle tannin and a fresh line of acid. Built for the table rather than the cellar.

The fruit is estate grown at Gundagai, in the northern foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The soil is an ironstone rich volcanic red clay loam, which the estate credits for its medium bodied reds. Barbera is one of several Italian varieties planted here, alongside nebbiolo, sangiovese and fiano.

The vineyard started in the 1990s as a Southcorp project named for Max Schubert of Penfolds. Three business partners took it over in 2009 and now farm around 200 hectares. Simon Robertson runs both the vineyard and the winery. The site is certified by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, and the team repurposes organic waste and keeps diverse pasture plants between the rows.

Table of Plenty is the easy drinking end of the range. Pour it with pizza, a bowl of pasta, a charcuterie board or sausages off the grill.

Producer note

Tumblong Hills farms about 200 hectares at Gundagai in southern New South Wales, under the same three owners since 2009. Simon Robertson is both viticulturist and winemaker.
