Thistledown is a Grenache house first. Giles Cooke, a Master of Wine, founded it in 2010 with fellow MW Fergal Tynan. Winemaker Peter Leske is on hand year-round. The stated aim is to pick fruit on the way up, not the way down, then do as little as possible in the winery. No other winery has won the Halliday Grenache of the Year three times.
Gorgeous is the entry point. The fruit comes from a number of old Grenache vineyards, some of them dry-grown bush vines, across the Riverland and McLaren Vale. Each vineyard is fermented wild in its own small batch, with some whole bunches, then raised in larger oak and bottled without fining or filtration.
The house style is perfumed, violets and wild strawberry, with a Pinot-like lightness and a savoury finish. Give it a light chill in summer and put it next to a roast chook.
