Small Victories is the second label of Elderton, the Barossa family winery. It exists for wines brighter and more playful than the main range. The bottle on our shelf is the Grenache Mataro blend, Grenache leading with Mataro in support, and the Grenache comes from old vines.
The Grenache is picked by hand and fermented with a small portion of whole bunches in a concrete tulip. The Mataro ferments on its own in open cement tanks. Both parcels then go to seasoned French oak for malolactic and a stretch on lees, which is where the silky tannin comes from. The winemaker's note on the 2023 finds savoury herbs and a hint of musk on the nose. Then come red fruits with gamey undertones, spice and cracked pepper.
Serve it at cellar temperature, 14 to 18 degrees. Duck ragu with pasta, or a pumpkin and blue cheese tart.
