About
A dry rosé of 100% Hunter Valley Sangiovese made with minimal intervention. Delicate fresh strawberries and soft rose petals lift into red fruit, florals and zesty grapefruit, with lively acidity carrying a refreshingly crisp, graceful dry finish. Vegan-friendly, and styled after the pale, dry rosés of France.
Sangiovese is not the obvious Hunter grape for rosé, which is exactly why Shannon Burgess-Moore uses it. Grandis is his own lo-fi project, run alongside his day job as winemaker at De Iuliis. The grape brings natural acidity, so the wine stays dry and taut without any tricks in the cellar.
The juice is fermented cool in stainless steel to keep the strawberry and rose-petal lift. It then spends a short time in seasoned oak barrels with the lees stirred, and that is where the texture comes from. The oak is old enough to add nothing you can taste.
Serve it well chilled on a warm afternoon. The producer points to fresh seafood, summer salads and charcuterie, and all three work. Drink it young while the fruit is at its brightest.
Producer note
Grandis Wines is about experimentation — exploring alternative varietals and forgotten styles made with unconventional methods, poured at the family's Moorebank Private Vineyard cellar door in Pokolbin.
