About
Poppelvej is the small, McLaren Vale-based label run by Danish brothers Uffe and Jens Deichmann out of Sellicks Beach. This wine's fruit is sourced from the Peacock vineyard in Oakbank, Adelaide Hills, and is made from Pinot Meunier fermented as 25% whole bunch and 75% hand-destemmed, then aged in neutral oak. It's a light, crunchy red with bright juicy acidity and a floral fragrance, with the stalky, peppery edge that whole-bunch inclusion tends to bring — built for a light chill rather than the cellar.
Uffe Deichmann was selling wine in a small Copenhagen shop and drinking whatever Australian bottles he could find, mostly Yalumba, Penfolds and Torbreck. He did a vintage in Sonoma, then talked his boss into six months off to work one at Yalumba. He first saw the Adelaide foothills in 2012 and knew he had to make wine here.
He was meant to fly home three weeks after that vintage. Instead he met his wife Nicole at a music festival in Canberra. The two of them went back and forth between Denmark and Australia until 2016, when they rented a house in McLaren Vale. His first vintage was one tonne of grenache, and every bottle went to Denmark. He now works out of Whites Valley, buying from sustainable vineyards in the Hills and the Vale.
Uffe's own serving note: throw it in the esky at your next barbecue.
Producer note
Poppelvej was started by Danish sommelier-turned-winemaker Uffe Deichmann and his brother Jens, named for the street in their hometown of Hundested, Denmark. The wines are wild-fermented with no additions beyond a small amount of sulphur at bottling, from vineyards worked organically or biodynamically.
