About
Cherry, plum, soft tannin — the reliable mid-week Yarra Pinot pour.
Soumah's home vineyard, Hexham, sits in the Warramate foothills at Gruyere, 110 to 150 metres up on sandy clay loam. It was first planted in 1997 and carries four pinot clones, MV6, 777, Pommard and 115, each set on its own aspect of the hill. A second site, Upper Ngumby at Yarra Glen, has a western hill shielding the vines from the afternoon sun. The house line is that pinot does not like heat but does like the sun.
The d'Soumah tier is the estate's everyday range. This pinot is fermented in barrel, with a fair share of new oak to help it knit together. Brett Butcher founded Soumah after a career in five-star hotels. Chief winemaker Scott McCarthy grew up on a family vineyard in Mildura, then worked at Yalumba, in Napa and in the Loire.
Serve it cool, around 15 degrees, with pasta, roast chicken or duck.
