About

The Clare Valley Shiraz house style — generous fruit, real structure, reliable mid-tier drinking.

The Barrys have been buying Clare Valley dirt for three generations. Jim planted shiraz on the Armagh block in 1968, then bought Lodge Hill in 1977, a 133 hectare property once known as Wolta Wolta. Florita at Watervale followed in 1986 and Spring Farm in 2010. That spread of family-owned vineyards is why the house can keep its everyday shiraz consistent year to year.

Winemaking has moved with the times. The family once matured its shiraz in new American oak only. Now it uses a mix of French and American barrels, which the winery says gives a sleeker, more elegant frame around the fruit. Tom Barry, the third generation, runs the winemaking after vintages overseas.

This is the bottle for a midweek roast or a bowl of slow-cooked beef. Open it an hour ahead if you can, and do not feel bad about drinking it young.
