About
Justin McNamee's structured, savoury McLaren Vale Shiraz. Well-judged.
McNamee calls what he does feral winemaking. The Shiraz ferments on ambient yeasts in open vessels and sits on its skins for a long stretch before pressing. It then goes to seasoned barrels, with new oak kept well under a fifth in any year. It is bottled without fining or filtration.
He farms some vines himself and buys the rest from growers he rates among the best in McLaren Vale. His own blocks run on an uncertified regime somewhere between organic and biodynamic. The style he chases is intensity and brightness together, which he puts down to the region's sunlight and coastal breezes. The old world is the reference point for texture and harmony rather than for flavour.
The winery suggests braised beef short ribs with soy, ginger and hoisin. A slow-roasted lamb shoulder does the job too.
