About
Sangiovese with a small share of Colorino, grown organically in the Chianti hills within sight of San Gimignano. Cherry, plum and violet with tobacco behind it, good structure and balanced tannin. A Chianti Superiore that rewards a few years in the rack.
The estate is at Vico d'Elsa in Barberino Tavarnelle, in the Chianti hills within sight of San Gimignano. Sangiovese is hand picked from the second half of September into early October, with a small share of Colorino.
Fermentation is spontaneous in concrete tanks and the skins stay in the wine for three weeks. It then ages in stainless steel and in French oak. About 18,000 bottles are made each year.
The Majnoni family has held the property since 1871, and the buildings at its centre were once a medieval hospital and shelter for travellers. Pietro Majnoni converted the farm to organics in 2001 and his son Cesare runs it now. The house has made this wine since 1965. It drinks well young, and the family reckons it is best around six years from harvest.
Producer note
Fattoria Majnoni Guicciardini has been in the same family at Vico d'Elsa since 1871. Pietro Majnoni took the farm organic in 2001 and his son Cesare now runs the winemaking.
