About
Estate Pinot Noir off Stargazer's own Tea Tree vineyard, a quarter of it fermented as whole bunches. Red cherry, pomegranate, violets and thyme on the nose, then clove and nutmeg spice across the palate. Light bodied with soft, velvety tannin and bright acid.
Every bunch comes off the Palisander vineyard at Tea Tree, at the northern end of the Coal River Valley. Two parcels feed it, one planted in 2002 and one in 2017. Wadenswil is the main clone, with Abel, 115, 777 and MV6 alongside it, all cane pruned on a vertical trellis.
A quarter of the fruit goes in as whole bunches and the rest is destemmed without crushing. Three days of cold soak come first, then a wild ferment. The wine spends eight months in French oak puncheons, thirty per cent of them new, and six weeks in tank before bottling. It lands at 12.5 per cent.
Give it twenty minutes in the fridge before you pour. Duck, mushrooms or a plate of charcuterie will all meet it halfway.
Producer note
Sam Connew picked up her Pinot habit working a vintage in Oregon, long before Tasmania. She bought the Tea Tree vineyard in 2016 and has planted it out twice since, in 2017 and again in 2021.
