About
Lime juice, floral lift and fine acidity with a long, mineral finish. Watervale Riesling is known for finesse and perfume — this is a textbook example of the style.
The vineyard is a two-hectare patch in the south-west corner of what was once the Florita vineyard, a historic Riesling site in Watervale. The block is over 70 years old, with the Riesling replanted 46 years ago. They are dry grown, which the clay in the soil makes possible.
Tom and Sam Barry, grandsons of Jim Barry, make it at the Wilson Vineyard at Polish Hill River. The 2019 fruit was hand-picked in late February and chilled for 24 hours before whole bunch pressing. The juice was racked off its solids after two days and fermented with as little oxygen as possible.
At seven years old it has started to fill out. Michael Jappy of CellarHand finds ginger, lime curd and hay on the nose, and a honeycomb edge on the palate. Still youthful, still driven by acid. Drink it with fish and chips, or hold it to 2027.
