About
100% Vermentino from Sella & Mosca's Gallura vineyards on the granite-rubble slopes of Mount Limbara, in the DOCG's Superiore style. Green apple, melon and hawthorn blossom sit over mineral, sea-breeze notes, with extraordinary freshness and salinity carrying through to a persistent, faintly almond-tinged finish. Best drunk within three years of vintage.
The Monteoro vines sit in the hill band on the south side of Mount Limbara, where the granite has weathered into coarse rubble. Summers are hot, but the swing between day and night is wide, and that swing is what keeps Vermentino fresh here. The vines average 18 years old, spur-pruned on cordons and planted at 4,000 to the hectare, with yields held to 80 quintals.
In the winery the grapes are soft-pressed and cold-settled, then given a long, cool ferment in stainless steel. The wine rests four months on its lees in steel and skips malolactic conversion, so the acidity stays bright. The producer's own note finds aromatic herbs, berries and shrubs behind the fruit, then a soft entry lifted by that acidity.
Drink it cold and young. Grilled fish, clams with spaghetti or a plate of fritto misto are the natural partners.
