About
Hunter Shiraz — the Hunter style isn't big, it's elegant. Dark fruit, earth, gentle pepper.
The 2022 season in the Hunter was a cool one, and First Creek says this wine reflects it. The frame is lighter than the big years, the fruit is sweet and lifted, and the alcohol sits at 13 percent.
The fruit came in as small parcels and fermented in two to four tonne batches. Just under a third went in as whole berries, a trick for fragrance and a clear red-berry line. After pressing it went to French oak hogsheads and puncheons, a fifth of them new. The oak reads as toast and mocha over blue and black fruit, with the earthy, charcuterie and sarsaparilla notes that mark Hunter Shiraz.
Serve it at 12 to 14 degrees, a little cooler than most people pour red. It will drink well until 2027. Try it with barbecued ribs, a beef stew or a spiced lamb tagine.
